Curated by Tom Kovac, RMIT University and Alessandro Melis, University of Portsmouth titled Cityx Venice responds to ‘How will we live together?’ curated by Hashim Sarkis, MIT & organized by La Biennale di Venezia.
Our group is exploring methods for harnessing growth of micro-organisms at a range of scales from the gene buildings and building components, developing a library of fabrication strategies and biological materials including materials that are made of living cells; materials which are made by living cells; materials that are induced changes to the cells environment and materials which are made active by the incorporation of living cells.
The video will show examples of mycelium, bacterial cellulose, biomineralization and hygromorphs (water responsive materials). We will show how, by integrating the self-assembly of materials with digital fabrication, our group are building new construction methods. We are also developing new design methods which allow us to design with, often complex, biological systems with emergent properties. These methods will ultimately allow us to scale-up. Combining digital and biological and growing the buildings and cities of the future.
